Spring is here!
Now that Spring is officially here, it’s time to get out to farms and farmer’s markets, organic restaurants, and “green” stores! Feeling cooped all all winter isn’t good for many reasons: lack of sunlight and Vitamin D conversion, lack of good, fresh air, and less social interaction. It was also more difficult (or impossible) to get to a farmer’s market, and find fresh produce that wasn’t shipped to your grocery store.
But it’s time to get out there and enjoy all that Springtime has to offer! As I began to realize how much really good information we lost by scratching our entire website, and I came to the conclusion that it will be impossible to recreate it, I have slowly come out of my funk! There was just so much information and research that I cannot re-create, so instead, today, I am going to have some fun, and talk about our favorite organic, sustainable, and green places to visit!
My first favorite on the list is the Locke Store in Millwood, VA. The Locke Store is an adorable and quaint purveyor of delicious foods and wines. You open the creeky old front door, and it’s as if you’ve stepped back in time! Built in 1836 by James Clarke, across from the Burwell -Morgan Merchant Mill, it was originally a general store and inn. Through the years, it has remained a store, when Juliet Mackay-Smith took over in 2002. Her commitment to local, sustainable foods is exactly what this doctor ordered!
Juliet’s team offers a variety of freshly prepared and delicious food all day long. It’s all made in the back kitchen, and you can chose from a variety of dishes. We have enjoyed EVERY dish we’ve ever had there! We love visiting in Spring and Summer, when we take our lunch across the street on a tray and we enjoy a picnic! You can sit by the waterfall, or the creek, or on picnic tables around the Mill’s grounds. (The mill, by the way, stone grinds wheat to this day.)
The store’s selection of wines is huge and they have fresh and frozen items from local farms all around the area. Their organic coffee is my favorite around. The staff is always friendly and efficient. I just can’t say enough good things about the Locke Store. I highly recommend a visit. (preferably on a sunny day:)
Well, that’s all for today, and I’ll talk about more of our favorites establishments later. Enjoy Spring!
